Slovakia Jewish Heritage Tour
In the 1930s more than 130 000 Jews lived in Slovakia – many of them in Bratislava. Nowadays the majority of Jews live in Bratislava and in Kosice but also in Presov, Nove Zamky, Komarno, Nitra, Trnava and other towns. Slovakia has many interesting sites of Jewish interest. Our tour will show you the most important sites related with Jewish culture and history in Slovakia.
Day 1
We will pick you up from the airport in Bratislava and take you to your hotel. You will have free time for relaxation or a pleasant walk around the city. You will meet your guide during an evening Welcome meeting, when you will be introduced to tour itinerary. Overnight in Bratislava.
Day 2
After breakfast you will take part in a tour around the place referring to Jewish culture and conducted by a knowledgable guide. You will see Bratislava highlights such as Primate Palace, St. Martin Cathedral, Michael’s gate, City Hall and more. Among Jewish monuments you will see a Jewish memorial and Chatam Sofer’s grave. You will learn more about this Orthodox rabbi of European Jewry living in the first half of the 19th century. Overnight in Bratislava.
Day 3
You will visit a town of Trnava and go sightseeing its landmarks. You will visit a synagogue built in 1891 where the Museum of Jewish Culture’s exhibition is installed. You will stand by the Second World War a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust which is located in front of synagogue. You will continue your tour to the town of Nitra to visit a synagogue erected in the beginning of the 20th century. You will admire the quadrate structure of the synagogue, richly decorated. Overnight in Trencin.
Day 4
You will take part in a city tour around Trencin. You will see one of the most exquisite synagogues of Slovakia. You will also admire a picturesquely located castle built in the 11th century. You will head toward Liptovsky Mikulas town where you will take a pleasant walking tour and visit synagogue which was built in 1942-1946. You will have a lunch break there and go to Bardejov. Overnight in Bardejov.
Day 5
After breakfast, you will take a tour around the beautiful medieval town of Bardejov. You will explore its landmarks such as the church of St. Egidius, the City Hall, the city walls with bastions as well as you will visit Bikkur Cholim synagogue. You will continue your tour to the town of Presov which is the 3rd biggest city of Slovakia. You will take a nice walk around charming streets of the Old Town and see the Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the 17th-century Protestant college & Protestant church and one of the best-preserved synagogues in Slovakia, which houses nowadays a Museum of Jewish culture. Overnight in Kosice.
Day 6
You will have a chance to admire Kosice’s wonderful architecture, walking along its old streets. On your way you will see the former neological synagogue erected in the 20th century, the beautiful facade of school which was one of the educational centres for the Košice Jewish congregation. You will have chance to admire an interesting building of the Synagogue located on Puskinova street and you will notice a bronze Holocaust memorial plate in the wall of the synagogue. You will also see the site where the Jewish Ghetto was located during the WWII. You will continue your tour to Jewish cemeteries which are located out of the city centre. Then, you will head toward Bratislava. Overnight in Bratislava.
Day 7
