Slovakia Wooden Churches Tour – 7 days

We invite you to take part in a fantastic tour to the hidden gems of Europe. You will discover Slovakia’s wooden churches including both churches inscribed into UNESCO’s list and “out-of-the-beaten-track” churches. You will also explore beautiful countryside, cities, towns and villages. Here is our suggestion for itinerary of 7 day tour:

Day 1

We will pick you up from the airport in Bratislava and take you on a pleasant drive toward Banska Bystrica. You will be welcomed with a Welcome drink and our guide will introduce you into tour itinerary. We will recommend you nice places for good lunch/dinner. Overnight in Banska Bystrica.

Day 2

After breakfast, you will head toward the small but picturesque village of Hronsek, where the old wooden church was built in the 18th century. You will have a chance to admire the fine wooden belfry and learn more about its history. The next attraction will be the wooden church in Lestiny which is famous for lavishly painted interior decoration and the 18th-century altar. Both churches have been inscribed into UNESCO’s list. Overnight in Zeberec.

Day 3

In the morning, you will head toward an open-air museum to learn more about the daily life from the 19-20th century. You will find peasant’s as well as farmer’s houses, mill, barns, churches there. You will continue your tour to Tvrdosin where the Gothic wooden Roman-Catholic church of All Saints is situated. You will notice the paintings of the Apostles, your attention will be drawn by the Late Renaissance pulpit with figures of the Evangelists and a painting of St George. Then, you will drive to Kezmarok. The best preserved Slovak wooden sacral buildings of the articled Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity are located there. The church was built in 1717 with yew and red spruce. You will stay overnight in Kezmarok.

Day 4

This day, you will visit the 15th century wooden church of St Francis of Assisi located in Hervartov. It is the oldest and best preserved wooden church in Slovakia, which is famous for the Gothic pictures and wall paintings. Then, you will head toward the town of Bardejov, which is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Slovakia. You will have a chance to admire still standing stone walls and bastions as well as admirable architecture of the Old Town. You will visit the church of St. Egidius and climb the church tower to see scenic panorama views over the city. Overnight in Bardejov.

Day 5

After breakfast, you will drive to the another architectural pearl of Slovakia – the wooden church of St Michael the Archangel, which was built in Ladomirova in 1742. Its uniqueness lies in a structure which was created without using a single metal nail. You will continue your tour to the 17th – century wooden church of St Nicolas in Bodruzal. You will see the log building consists of three parts and three little towers. Then, you will head toward Snina which is a gate to the National Park of Poloniny. The Poloniny NP along with volcanic mountain range of Vihorlat is the protected area of Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians. Leisure time and overnight in Snina.

Day 6

You will visit four villages which are famous for old wooden churches before you get Kosice. You will see St. Michael Archangel church in Topola, the greek-catholic church of St. Michael Archangel in Rusky Potok, the church of St. Michael Archangel in Ulicske Krive and the church of the relics of St. Nicholas in Ruska Bystra. Then, you will drive to the city of Kosice which is the second largest city of Eastern Slovakia’s and which is dotted with historical monuments. You will visit St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral – a impressive building considered to be one of the most wonderful Gothic structures in the world. You could take a pleasant walk around charming Old Town and enjoy the magical atmosphere on the square. Overnight in Kosice.

Day 7
